Possibly the best book I've read- it's thorough, accessible and objective. Che comes over as being similar to William Wallace- both only really had one big vicory followed by repeated failure then execution, but are inspiring none the less. Not only does the bookdetail Che's life, it also studies realpolitik in action, with the disgusting exploits of the CIA as they assassinate, and help to violently overthrow democratically elected governments when they disagree with the result, showing their true beliefs are those of property not freedom. The events of Guatemala, Chile, the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban missile crisis, Sino-soviet split, and more are all documented. Famous figures such as Malcolm X, JFK, Evita, Nasser, Nehru, Mao all crop up too. Overall this should be considered a compulsory read, particularly to those in America who know little of communism, the cold war etc. other than the propaganda they've been fed over the decades- it probably won't convert you but it will give you a greater understanding as to the other side of the argument. Granted, if you're intimidated by large book, this won't be for you- but then again what would Che think of someone who's afraid of an inanimate paper based product?

When one hears the word "communist" attached to the man we know as "Che," most Americans shrink from reading the book, and assume it is one that glorifies both the ideology and the man. This book is written in an unbiased fashion, and yet there will always be those who say it is pro-Che; this shows you the character of Ernesto Guevara. I read this book not really knowing who he was, and about 750 pages later, I had his famous face tatooed on my arm. To many he is an atheist's Jesus Christ, but this is detrimental to Che, he was real, and he truly gave his life for the people of the Earth. An artist, a writer, a genius, and a compassionate revolutionary, I concur wholeheartedly with Jean Paul Sartre that he was the most complete human being of our time, and suggest you read this book, it envokes the finite man eloquently.

Well, I've almost finished reading this engrossing book. As a result feel that I know more about Che than anything else I've read, heard or seen of him.I found myself drawing some inevitable comparisons between Che and Ho Chih Minh. After reading Mike McLear's book "Vietnam - 10,000 Day War" and since reading yours I tried to imagine how each of these formative characters would've dealt with each other in person.Knowing what Che was like I think he would've viewed Uncle Ho as being a bit of a fence sitter in the early stages. But later, when the Vietnam War was in full swing, Che would've been enamoured of the determination of Ho and his people in their struggle.Ho was really a Nationalist with more in common with Fidel who played the real politik game with finese! While Che was the uncompromising communist. Che's version of Communism was far more ideal than those of the Soviets or the Chinese. The feeling I got about Che near the end was that he was feeling increasingly isolated in his views - how fickle politics can be! Even his realationships with Fidel and Raul began the change - maybe they viewed him as a bit of a liability.Still I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall to see how Che and Ho dealt with each other. While there's mention of Cuba's verbal support of Vietnam - I would've thought that it was a great opportunity for Che's expanding guerella network to be exported to Vietnam. But I suppose, given Fidel's political juggling act, that playing that type of card would've caused more problems with the US - resulting in more severe measures by it and its' agencies.In the end I admired Che - a driven, principled man - but one who still had his faults.Wonder what Che would think of the world today - with the breaking down of the iron and bamboo curtains, and the demise of global communism? Maybe he would've mellowed with age - who knows?

This book was a real page turner for me and i have gone back to read particular events that happened several times. Before you can really understand what Che had to say in the speeches/essays and other writings he produced, it is essential to understand the events of his life, especially the events that led to the conclusion of the Marxist path he took. and the best way to do that is to find an unbiased source, which, in that case, i highly recommend this biography. This book clearly explains, in great detail, the unfolding of physical events and mental decisions, often quoting lines from Che's journals, political writings and speeches. The detail of this book is so great, that, at times (such as the granma landing) you really get pulled into what's going on. mr. anderson has truly made a wonderful book. viva el che!
