As an undergraduate in SUNY at Stony Brook over 40 years ago I stumbled upon the treasure trove of Latin American documents bequeathed to the university and was so fascinated by the English translation of the original Gulf Coast journey that I found and read the translation of Cabeza de Vaca's South American journal. Donald Chipman's account is a bare summary of the incredible trials that I was hoping to reread. After finishing Chipman's book my reaction was "kind of interesting; a not very captivating read; nothing to reread."To give you a taste of the originals--in the first book we are told of how the Spanish soldiers, slogging through the Florida jungle wearing all their Spanish armor, encountered mosquitoes so thick in the air that they were breathing them. In the second journal we are told, in CdeV's very reserved and formal manner, of how the natives' arrows, tipped with poison, would not initially hurt the soldiers, "but when the soldiers would partake of sexual excesses with women they would die a horrible death." These taunting (and haunting) simple statements of life on the trail gave me more to think about, and a greater appreciation of understatement, than comes across in Chipman's retelling of the story.I have no special desire to study the many treatises on Cabeza de Vaca...I would just like to reread the simple translation of the original journals. Some expanded notes wouldn't hurt, but, IMHO, no one could better express the thoughts, feelings and experiences of a 16th C. conquistador as well as the man himself.Once you've read the originals, this book would serve well as a cheat sheet for where CdeV went and when---if you needed it for a term paper.
Very interesting read about the first man that traversed the Lone Star State and the American Southwest. It's a rather short book, and can be read in one sitting.
Great!
Before reading this book, I had never heard of Cabeza de Vaca. His adventures seem to have been surpassed by those of Cortez, Desoto, etc. The book was interesting, but a little hard to follow as an Audible version. The names of people, Indian tribes & dates made it hard to keep straight; I'm sure it would have been much easier if I had a visual version to follow. The narrator did a pretty good job, but was a little boring at times. Also, in listening instead of seeing, the way some of the book was written was bothersome. The narrator would be talking in third person, then suddenly switch to first person. I'm sure in the written book, there would have been quotations around these parts.II enjoyed learning more about another Spanish explorer who helped shape the history of our nation. So many of the things that I learned about the early Spanish Conquistadores made them out to be brutal in their travels that this look at a more humanitarian one was refreshing.I was provided a copy of this audiobook by the narrator/author/publisher and chose to review it.
